Sisal: kayak, flamingos and beach
A magic town that is still a fishing port
Sisal was the port henequen left the country through, and what remains of that is the old houses and the feel of a town that never became a hotel strip. The morning is spent kayaking the wetlands: paddling through mangrove, watching birds — pink flamingos among them — and taking a dip in a freshwater spring. Then the beach until four: white sand, turquoise water and very few people.

Questions
Do I need to know how to paddle?
No. The wetland water is calm and shallow, and the guide stays alongside. If you would rather not paddle, the trip can be done by flat-bottomed boat.
Is lunch not included?
No, and that is deliberate: there are several seafood places on the beach and everyone picks their own. Budget 250 to 450 pesos per person.
How much is a palapa?
It varies by day, usually 150 to 300 pesos for the whole afternoon. Worth it if you are with children.
