Questions

Is the return also by train?

No. The outbound leg to Izamal is by train and the rest of the day is by van, because from there you carry on to Chichén Itzá and the cenote.

Do I need ID?

Yes. Official photo ID is required to board the Maya Train. Keep it on you, not in your luggage.

What if the train is delayed?

The itinerary has slack and the guide is in contact with the station. If the service were cancelled, the transfer is made by road at no extra cost.
