Isla Mujeres: reef and beach

Off Isla Mujeres lies the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc National Park, created on July 19, 1996, with more than 8,600 hectares of coral reef, mangroves and seagrass beds. CONANP notes that it's part of the Mesoamerican Reef System and protects coral species; access is by authorized boats. At Punta Sur there's a reef for snorkeling and cliffs overlooking the island.

Holbox: the island without cars

Holbox lies within the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area, which covers more than 154,000 hectares. There are no cars; everyone gets around by golf cart or on foot. Its waters shelter whale sharks, Caribbean manatees and sea turtles. From Mérida, the Mary Tours private transfer takes you to Chiquilá and waits while you spend the day on the island; you buy the ferry ticket there.

The whale shark

SEMARNAT, Mexico's environment ministry, places seasonal whale shark aggregations near Holbox and Isla Mujeres. It's a seasonal event, and tours run only with authorized operators.
