Two buildings, two histories
Mexico's INAH stresses not to mix up the timelines: La Mejorada's church and convent are separate buildings.
- Church: begun in 1610 and inaugurated in 1624, with Plateresque features on its façade.
- Convent: built between 1688 and 1694.
From convent to hospital to university
The convent building became a hospital in 1828. In 1983 it became home to the UADY School of Architecture, part of the state university. The complex was declared a historic monument in 1948.
The neighborhood
La Mejorada also names a traditional downtown neighborhood with its own square or park, one of the green spaces that structure the historic center along with Santa Lucía and others.
Tips
- University areas may be off-limits; follow posted instructions.
- The church can be visited around its service times.
- Pair it with a walk through the neighborhood and its old houses.
From La Mejorada to Izamal
If you'd like to see more of Yucatán afterward, Mary Tours' day trips depart from its office on Calle 61, between 62 and 64, in downtown Mérida. If convent architecture interests you, the convent of San Antonio de Padua in Izamal is Yucatán's great example. The booking section shows dates, times and prices.
