What it is

The city's 2024–2027 Municipal Culture Program describes it as a Sunday cultural program that usually takes over downtown spaces with activities and handicraft sales. For many visitors it's the best way to see locals enjoying their city.

Where it's held

It's traditionally associated with the Plaza Grande and downtown streets. But the location isn't fixed: in 2024, during the square's renovation, the city temporarily moved it to Santa Ana park. So don't assume one location for every edition.

What to expect

  • Stalls with crafts and traditional food.
  • Cultural activities and music.
  • A family atmosphere, with lots of locals.

Specific programming and times change from year to year; the city's Capital Cultural calendar is the source to confirm.

Tips

  • Check the municipal calendar that same weekend.
  • Bring cash for small stalls.
  • Go toward sunset, when the heat eases.
  • Watch your belongings in crowded areas.

Making a weekend of it

To get out of the city, Mary Tours has its office right in the historic center (Calle 61 #518-B, between 62 and 64). Many travelers take a day trip on Saturday and save Sunday for enjoying downtown. Check the booking section for available trips with current times and prices.

Fun facts

  • Mérida en Domingo is part of the city's culture program.
