Progreso or the Caribbean: which beach day from Mérida is right for you

Progreso and the north coast are half an hour from Mérida, on the Gulf of Mexico: calm water, a boardwalk, the world's longest pier according to Guinness, and sandbanks like Isla Columpios. The Caribbean (Isla Mujeres) is several hours away but offers a reef, snorkeling and the most intense turquoise. For a relaxed day, choose Progreso; for the Caribbean experience, Isla Mujeres.

Progreso and its record pier

Guinness World Records lists the Progreso pier, on the Gulf of Mexico, as the longest pier in the world at 8,018.98 meters, a record credited to the Municipality of Progreso on July 1, 2023. The category is jetty or pier, not bridge. According to Guinness, it began operating in 1941; Yucatán's tourism department explains that the first phase was built between 1937 and 1941 and that a remote terminal of about five kilometers was added between 1984 and 1989. There's been a formal cruise terminal since 2000.

The Caribbean in a day

Isla Mujeres sits off Cancún. The Mary Tours trip includes the boat, reef snorkeling with gear, a buffet lunch at a beach club and time on Playa Norte. Off the island lies a national park that's part of the Mesoamerican Reef System. It costs more and takes longer than a day in Progreso, but it's a different experience. Booking from this page as a group of 4 to 20 gets you a per-person coupon.
