Who the Celestún transfer is for
The transfer is private transportation: an air-conditioned van, a driver and traveler insurance, leaving Mérida in the morning and returning in the afternoon. There's no guide or package. It's a good fit if:
- You're traveling as a family or group and would rather not share the van with strangers.
- You want more time at the beach or in town than on the boat, or the other way round.
- You're into bird photography and want to arrange your own boat ride.
If you'd rather have everything sorted (boat, guide and lunch), the Flamingo Route tour includes all of that.
How to arrange the boat in Celestún
The estuary boat ride is booked in Celestún, directly with local operators. Before you get on, ask:
- Which spots the ride covers: the flamingo area, the mangrove tunnel, the freshwater spring, the petenes.
- How long it lasts and whether the price is per boat or per person.
- Whether there are life jackets for everyone.
Remember you're inside the Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve, a protected area of more than 81,000 hectares across Yucatán and Campeche, according to CONANP, Mexico's protected areas commission. Boats must keep their distance from the flamingos so they aren't disturbed.
What else to do in Celestún
- The beach, with calm Gulf water, perfect for a lazy afternoon.
- The waterfront and town, with fish and seafood restaurants.
- Sunset: on the west coast the sun sets over the sea. If you want to see it, arrange it with the driver and keep the return time in mind.
The reserve is also an Important Bird Area, so bring binoculars if you have them.
What's included and what isn't
The transfer includes an air-conditioned van, a driver and traveler insurance. It doesn't include the boat, food, drinks, entry fees or tips. The price is per van, with set departure and return times for the day; rates and capacities are in the catalogue on this page. Bookings from here are for groups of 4 or more.
What to bring
- Cash for the boat and lunch.
- Swimsuit under your clothes, a towel and a change of clothes.
- Biodegradable sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

- Water: the Gulf sun wears you out.
