How the port works
According to the Port of Progreso operating rules, the tourist terminal receives cruise ships and ferries and handles passenger embarkation and disembarkation. The port's master development plan describes a cruise pier with two berths of 300 meters each.
The same document notes that, under normal conditions, ships arrive early and sail at sunset the same day. Always check the all-aboard time set by your cruise line.
Three ways to spend the day
- Progreso itself. Beach, boardwalk and the pier, listed by Guinness World Records as one of the longest in the world. The most relaxed option.
- Mérida. About 36 kilometers away: the historic center, the Plaza Grande and Paseo de Montejo. Allow plenty of time for the round trip.
- The nearby coast. Isla Columpios and the Chuburná dunes are just west of Progreso.
What to know about tours
Mary Tours trips are designed to leave from and return to Mérida on full-day schedules, so not all of them fit a cruise stop. If you're arriving by cruise and want an excursion, message before your trip with your arrival and all-aboard times: a private transfer with a van and driver may fit your schedule better. Bookings from this page are for groups of 4 or more.
A little Progreso history
The port of Progreso opened on July 1, 1871, because Mérida needed a closer port; before that, the peninsula's trade went through Sisal. Today it's Yucatán's main deep-water port.
