The two big downtown markets
A municipal report names Lucas de Gálvez and San Benito as Mérida's main markets, both downtown. They're separate markets, though close together.
- Lucas de Gálvez: turned 139 in 2026, with about 3,000 vendors, and reopened after a full renovation that year.
- San Benito: a public market for everyday shopping.
Neighborhood markets
Beyond the big two, traditional neighborhoods such as Santiago have smaller, calmer local markets. They're ideal for seeing how residents shop and grabbing a regional breakfast.
Markets getting a refresh
The city has run programs to revitalize downtown markets. The 2026 Lucas de Gálvez renovation, for example, added a gallery of photos from the 1930s onward, a mural and a space called La Placita.
How to explore them
- Early, with cash in small bills.
- Hungry: regional food is part of the visit.
- Respectfully: ask before taking photos.
- Unhurried: products and hours vary by stall and day.
Markets and day trips
Mary Tours' office is at Calle 61 #518-B, between 62 and 64, just steps from the Plaza Grande. Its day trips to Chichén Itzá, the Homún cenotes, Celestún or the Caribbean leave from there. A good plan is to explore the markets on a free morning and save your other days for seeing the peninsula. Schedules and prices are in the booking section on this page.
