Bacalar in a nutshell
It's the largest surface body of fresh water on the peninsula, with shades that change with depth and light. Its stromatolites, built by microbial communities, grow about a millimeter a year and some are thousands of years old, so they must never be stepped on.
Isla Mujeres in a nutshell
Off the island lies the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc National Park, created in 1996, with coral reef, mangroves and seagrass, part of the Mesoamerican Reef System. At Punta Sur there's a reef for snorkeling and cliffs with views.
Who each one is for
- Bacalar: people who don't do well with waves or seasickness, prefer calm fresh water and want landscape photos.
- Isla Mujeres: people who want an ocean beach, snorkeling and island vibes.
Both come with a per-person coupon when booking from this page as a group of 4 to 20. If you have the days, do both: they're very different experiences.
