Celestún, for flamingos
Ría Celestún became a Biosphere Reserve in 2000, covering more than 81,000 hectares across Yucatán and Campeche. CONANP, Mexico's protected areas commission, identifies it as an important nesting refuge for the American flamingo and recommends November to February for the largest gatherings of flamingos and migratory birds. Its signature species also include the Morelet's crocodile and the Yucatan wren.
Sisal, for kayaking and calm
Sisal was declared a minor port in 1811 and shipped henequen, chicle and logwood to the world until 1871, when the Maritime Customs House moved to Progreso. Since the 16th century it had served as an anchorage linking Mérida with Campeche by sea. Today it's a fishing village with old mansions and an uncrowded beach, perfect if you're after peace and quiet.
Our recommendation
- First visit and traveling in winter: Celestún.
