One week in Yucatán from Mérida: seven days, seven landscapes

A week based in Mérida is enough to see almost everything that makes the peninsula special: the city, Chichén Itzá and Uxmal, cenotes, the flamingos of Celestún or Río Lagartos, the north coast and a day in the Caribbean (Bacalar, Isla Mujeres or Tulum). All with day trips and no hotel changes.

Seven-day itinerary

  1. Mérida on foot. The historic center (a Historic Monuments Zone since 1982, according to INAH), Plaza Grande, the cathedral and Paseo de Montejo.
  2. Chichén Itzá, Izamal and Valladolid. Valladolid is a Pueblo Mágico close to Chichén Itzá.
  3. Cenote day. Santa Bárbara (Homún) or Hacienda Mucuyché.
  4. Uxmal and the Puuc route with private transport.
  5. Flamingos. Celestún (closer) or Las Coloradas and Río Lagartos (further, more than 200 kilometers according to the state table).
  6. A short coast day. Isla Columpios and Progreso, or Sisal.
  7. The Caribbean. Bacalar, Isla Mujeres or Tulum.

How to order the days

The state tourism guide points out that travel times make any schedule a plan rather than a guaranteed timetable. So it's smart to:

  • Alternate long days (Chichén Itzá, Las Coloradas, the Caribbean) with short ones (cenotes, coast).
  • Put the Caribbean day after a quiet day.
  • Keep a spare "wildcard" day in case it rains or you're tired.

Evenings in Mérida

Many day trips get back to Mérida by mid-afternoon, so your evenings are free for the city. The city government publishes a weekly cultural program and events like the Biciruta, with daytime and evening routes that change by schedule. The Palacio Cantón on Paseo de Montejo hosts temporary exhibitions and public events.

Budget and booking

Over a week, day trips are the biggest part of the budget after accommodation. Check what each tour includes (lunch, entry fees, boat) and what's extra. For groups of 4 or more, booking from this page gives you a per-person coupon on Bacalar, Isla Mujeres and Tulum, usually the priciest days of the week.

Fun facts

  • Valladolid, a Pueblo Mágico, is close to both Chichén Itzá and Ek Balam.
  • Río Lagartos is about 215 kilometers from Mérida, according to the state guide.
