What Playa Norte is like
Playa Norte (literally "North Beach") sits at the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, the island you can see across the water from Cancún. It's a public beach of fine white sand and turquoise water, and the surf is usually low, so the sea reaches the shore gently. That makes it a favorite for easy swimming, for families and for anyone who just wants a palm tree and a nap.
Around it you'll find palms, areas with chairs and loungers, and services. It's a lively beach, especially during vacation periods, so don't expect solitude. Expect a classic Caribbean beach day.
What its Blue Flag status means
Blue Flag is an international award from the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). To earn it, a beach must meet 33 criteria covering environmental education and information, environmental management, water quality, and safety and services.
Playa Norte and Playa Centro, both on the island itself, held the award for the 2022–2023 season, and in August 2024 local press reported it had been renewed for a third consecutive year. The award is reviewed every season, so treat it as a sign of good practices rather than a permanent label.
Isla Mujeres beyond Playa Norte
The island's western shore, facing Cancún, is part of the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc National Park. It's a marine protected area of more than 8,600 hectares (about 33 square miles), decreed in 1996 and reclassified as a national park in 2000, according to Mexico's official federal gazette.
That's why the island is ringed by coral reefs you can explore by boat and snorkel, and why there are rules to protect them. The island's small downtown, with pedestrian streets, crafts and snacks, is also nearby.
Tips for your day at Playa Norte
- The sun is strong year-round. Bring a hat, sunglasses and a light shirt or rash guard for the water, and reapply protection.
- Stay hydrated. Heat and salt water dry you out faster than you'd think.
- Go easy on sunscreen in the sea. If you're swimming or snorkeling, cover-up clothing and minimal sunscreen are kinder to the reef.
- Sargassum. The Mexican Caribbean has seasons when sargassum seaweed washes ashore. Local authorities usually post beach conditions with a color-coded flag system; check it before you go.
- Safety flags. Even when the surf is gentle, respect the flags and the lifeguards.
- Valuables. Bring only what you need and a waterproof phone pouch.
